Celebration

A couple weeks ago I saw Celebration at a Katrina Benefit at Union Pool in Brooklyn and they were phenomenal. They are everything the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s should be: a three piece band who’s simple songs, to put it simply, rock, with a charismatic front woman who can get any crowd going. The key difference between them and the YYY’s? Celebration actually writes good songs as opposed to relying on a spasming hipster goddess making orgasmic shrieks to keep their fans entertained. The band that went on before Celebration, Rockets and Cars played a solid power pop set that, by my count, got 4 people dancing. Celebration’s appearance on the stage only had about 10 or 15 people moving to start but after one song that number had grown quite a bit. By the end of the next song after the singer’s jump into the crowd, dance with Aku from Dragons of Zynth and then blowing a fuse cutting the lights, almost everyone had been converted to the movement. It might have been the most involved I’ve ever seen a crowd for a fourth billed band. Now all we have to do is sit and wait for the October 14^th release date of their first album, recorded by David Sitek of TV On The Radio.
